Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The staff is super patient and friendly. Everyone at work loves this place and we frequently get take out. Sometimes their horchata tastes like watered down skim milk, but on good days it's really good. I love the steak quesadillas. They're also generous with the portions and chips+salsa.

After seeing all of these reviews, I had to check it out today. Ordered the Californian burrito and man that was tasty, will be back soon since it's right down the street from my house...
(4)Jang David K.
amazing. carne asada fries and al pastor burrito. game over. it's next to my house. game over. it's cheap. game over. oh yea, huge portions! game overrr.
(5)Greg H.
Hands down the best burritos I've had in the Bay Area, if not anywhere. The carnitas variety is the star, but try the Adobada as well (marinated stomach lining and other nasty bits, I believe .... yummy!). The tortas are also amazing! And they have a whole list of other authentic menu choices that I can't wait to try. The cherry on top is the very nice woman (the owner, I have heard) who takes your order and offers suggestions. I love this place!
(5)Adam W.
Need to try some more items and possiblly raise my score. Food is good quality, but a lot of it is way too rich if it has cheese/sour cream. They're probably trying to be generous, so I can't entirely hold it against them. Eating super-burrito is like eating a bowl of Big Mac sauce with a spoon.

The Taqueria formerly know as "Jimenez Taqueria" ridiculously off the hook!! Same owners, cooks, staff - just remodeled - service is excellent, as soon as we walked in, the lady at the register remembered what the wife liked in her burrito, good stuff... i ordered 6 tacos, tripas, lengua & al pastor. pastor - 5 of 5! - Everything is grilled to order, making it hot, fresh and juicy, it has small pieces of pineapple too, good stuff. lengua - 3 of 5 - it usually comes out with more flavor, it was still tender and the green salsa they put on it is great but the lengua itself was just missing a little bit of that flavor it normally has - but by far, still better than most places. tripas - 5 of 5 - my new all-time fav taco from any place... ever... it has a slight char from the grill and is so juicy and tender and it really, truly melts in your mouth. coca-cola classic - 5 of 5 -served in the bottle!!!
(5)Yousef R.
Some of the best asada meat I've had. Free chips, fast service, great prices. Takes credit, even for just one burrito. What more could you want?
(5)Sam C.
I've been here a couple of times. My favorites by far are the tacos. They have huge selection of meats and styles. Pretty much what you'd expect a Taqueria would have. I usually get a combo of 3 different types of Tacos. I think the next time i drop by I'm gonna try out the burritos. About the only thing I didn't like, was anything related to chips. We had the nacho chip platter.. it was really disappointing. The free chips and salsa aren't very good either. Come here and stick with what's good and you won't be disappointed.
(3)Gina G.
Awesome Taqueria! Never disappoints!
(5)Chuck G.
I still eat here a few times a week for lunch. I love there burritos so much but when I get back to work I am less than useful and zero energy so I decided to ask Viva if they could make a change and they happily did. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!!!! you can now order a "Super Paquito burrito" Yes i said it. It is a super burrito with smaller portions of rice and beans and extra meat. So one is able to finish the yummy burrito. A smaller version of the super. These guys certainly are the best in town.
(5)Kunal K.
After months of searching for a place I could get fries in my burrito ala San Diego style, I finally found the place. Viva Taqueria has an awesome California Burrito that can be made with Pollo Asada for us non-beef eaters. I absolutely love this place and wish I could eat there more often.
(5)Mike C.
Really good authentic Mexican food. The tacos are great and they have all of the different kind of meat choices you would expect to find in an authentic taqueria. The lengua is awesome! They have a small patio outside which is nice in good weather. Parking is slim and the restaurant is small but it is worth it.
(4)Melissa H.
So we came here on a Sunday because I had to try some tacos with barbacoa on it and it was sooo good! The meat portions are so generous. We decided to come back another time (we were addicted) and they were out of barbacoa so the friendly girl behind the counter suggested that I try the adobado which is marinated spicy pork and that was, dare I say, better than the barbacoa?
(5)Brian P.
I am so glad I found this place! After driving past it a few times I finally made the trip in and it was a great decision. I got the super burrito and it was wonderful. Usally I like hot sauce or some sort of "condiment" to add to the flavor, but this burrito was perfect as is and tasted great. I will deffinatly be comming back to Viva Taqueria in the near future.

I don't usually leave any comments on Yelp, but I feel compelled to report my experience. We Yelped this place looking for a new Mexican restaurant in our area. I was a bit skeptical based on my previous 3 visits, but I saw a new name and thought I will give it another shot. Additonaly, the reviews on Yelp were encouraging and I anticipated a satisfying lunch burrito. Everyone else describes the setting, so I will get straight to the food. I ordered the Chile Verde Chimichanga and my friend ordered the Fish Taco plate. The service was freindly and the kitchen smelled good. We helped ourselves to the chips and salsa and found a comfortable seat. To my surprise, the chips were stale and chewy (imagine a piece of cardboard). But, I figured this was just refried chips and hoped that it was not an indication of the food. I am normally not critical of food, especially Mexican food where 9 of 10 places are good. The one being exceptional. This place was probably the last mexican place I would ever choose to visit again. The Chimichanga was flavorless, contrary to thinking that the Chile Verde would have the most flavor of all the meat choices. The Sour Cream was watery, the Guacamole was light green, almost brown, and the rice was bland as well. My freinds fish tacos were no different ( I intentionally did not make mention of my food until he did). He described it as flavorless and bland before I even commented on my meal. Again, I am no food expert, but as I mentioned earlier, 9 of 10 mexican places are good, one exceptional. I am baffled on how many good reviews this place gets. The Yelp reviews are usally spot on and I continue to use Yelp whenever I can, but his one was clearly not as described (based on the chips alone). Just my 2-cents.

I hate having to spit food out in front of other people, so it's a good thing I ordered two carne asada tacos to go. Great flavor, but there was simply too much gristle and funky bits.
(3)Mark B.
I've only tried the enchiladas and flautas so far and both were very good. Next time I'll try the burritos. Portions are large and the food is fresh and flavorful!
(4)Bryan P.
Solid taqueria. It's not going to win any prizes for being super healthy, but it's a really solid, authentic joint.
(5)Todd O.
I've had the carne asada twice in the past week. Great portions - fatty but good. Horcata also good. Easy to park, great service.
(5)Matt R.
Amazing food. Free chips. Great Service. SO GOOD.
(5)Wayne L.
Tried the Chile Relleno next time out. Really really good. Nice big Poblano pepper, well roasted and battered. Very good sauce with it. They also had the green sauce on the salsa bar this time, which is a nice addition.
(5)Shru N.
We were yearning for mexican today, and i am usually apprehensive about mexican cuisine, we searched for the best mexican restaurant in san jose, and the reviews for this place where quite impressive, and surely the food did not disappoint. I had a taco salad which quite good ( did not like the tortilla shell , i have had better) , and my friend had camarenas al a diabla, which was spicy , and very tasty, with slices of avacado. Overall very filling for under 25 bucks ( which included 2 drinks as well). They have a nacho and salsa bar, with 3 different kinds of salsa that are really good, which is expected from any mexican place. They have indoor and outdoor seating, for a small place. Would definitely visit again
(4)Nora M.
Tasty! Got a chile verde burrito on my way home after work one day. The chile verde had a great flavor, and went well with the rice and beans. The tortilla was a little too soggy/soft, probably somewhat due to the chile. Appreciated the free chips and salsa too, even though I wasn't that impressed with the salsas (I need more heat!!). If you want to eat there, they have a small patio outside. Friendly employees too. Overall a good, dependable takout burrito place.

We helped friends move this weekend and they live just a few minutes from Viva Taqueria. They told us we needed to stop in and try the El Pastor. We were so hungry from moving - we purchased a Super Quesadia with Carnitas to eat on the way home, a Super Burito El Pastro and Super Nachos El Pastor - to share. The quesadia was AMAZING!! I think this is the best quesadia I have had and definately beats our other local hangouts in San Jose. The guys are still moving - so just sent my husband a note to pick up a Carnitas burito for me this evening on his way home.

This is one of the best taqueria's in the South Bay! We just ate there tonight and will be going back soon to try more of the menu. Their carnitas and carne asada tacos are simply perfection! But carnitas seems to be the easier meat to perfect, as I've had good carnitas in several other taquerias but carne asada is much harder to get right - and there's is just perfect! Their tortillas are excellent and their salsa choices are tasty. I would say that this place is even better than La Bamba in Mountain View - ya it's that good!
(5)Brent G.
A big scoring factor when it comes to mexican food, is the beans. and the refried beans here are whitish in color and tastes like it has vinegar in it, they have a sort of sour taste to them. They do have other good food (Chavadecas nd breakfast burritos), but I REALLY WISH THEY IMPROVED their BEANS. IT would make this a great spot for Santa Clara. They can take a lesson on beans from Victor's Taqueria just down the street on Winchester in SJ where their beans are great color and tastes fresh/home-made. Also, it would be great if they used some shredded chedder cheese, why does all their food items have to have only Jack?? PLUS did any else see the menu sign they have??? ALL THE FOOD LOOKS GREEN. not good! ....Where is the Pineapple Jarittos?
(2)Christine W.
BEST TAQUERIA!! My fiance and I love authentic Mexican food. We are lucky enough to live a block away and go here at least once a week. The food is ALWAYS fresh and service is outstanding. The owners are always there and are some of the nicest people we have ever met. We give this Taqueria an A++++ for amazing food and wonderful service!! Thank you for never disappointing Viva Taqueria!!!
(5)Jonathan M.
very solid California Burrito! The Cali burrito is basically carne asada fries wrapped in a tortilla. I asked for the chicken version, and it really hit the spot. I was kind of confused, though, since the chicken tasted a LOT like carnitas. I didn't know if they made a mistake, or if that's just the way they prepare their chicken.
(4)Kathee S.
I have lived in Santa Clara for over 40 years and this is the FIRST real good authentic Mexican taqueria I have ever tasted. This restauraunt passed over many owners in the last several years, and when the current owner, Miriam took over everything turned to GOLD. Viva Taqueria is the BOMB. The food tastes amazing and is always fresh. Her carnitas burritos are delicious, and the carne asada tacos are excellent. I was surprised to see some other negative reviews about the meat quality/taste, because I have to disagree 100%. I am SUPER picky about how meat taste and it's freshness, and Viva meat is always fresh and delicious.I am Mexican and can make all this food myself, but I am always more then happy to eat here and thoroughly enjoy it every time. My older sons love it and eat here at least 3 times a week. They say the fish burritos are amazing!
(5)Rebecca M.
So good, so nice, lovely place for a lunch or dinner on the patio. The space is small and recently remodeled. My fave meal is the tilapia fish filet. Close seconds include everything else I've had there: enchiladas, taco salad, wet burrito - Yum! They also have a slasa bar with all you can eat chips. I've tried 4 other Mexican restaurants in the area and this is the best! Plenty of regulars says it all - good consistent food with excellent service. My husbands favorite point: coke in the bottle with real sugar.
(5)Pete M.
One of my favorite Taquerias to go to in Santa Clara The Carne Asasda and Carnitas Tacos were to die for, if you eat there have some of the free chips and assorted salsas, the avocado lime salsa is by far my favorite, the Burritos are delicious and quite large The staff is super friendly and polite, lunch time is busy so try for 11:30 and you should be good to go. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it................
(5)Liz S.
So, I found this place one day Yelping for good tacos de lengua. I ordered some and yes, they hit the spot! Since that day in November, I've gone at least once a week. All their tacos are delicious. I've since exposed my coworkers to them and they will also vouch for their bean & cheese burrito & bistec de carne. I can personally recommend their tacos to anyone and also their agua de horchata. I love that I no longer need to drive to the East Side for good Mexican food!!
(5)Mike G.
What used to be Jimenez Taqueria is now "VIVA TAQUERIA".... This place is fantastic... Especially for being in Santa Clara, the prices are right on point. The food is just right for the money. The tacos are off the hook. The carnitas to die for....
(5)Jamie C.
I love the food. The people that work there are very nice and I enjoy the atmosphere. My husband and I go to get food almost every weekend. It is funny how those small holes in the walls can be such a great find.
(5)L P.
Large portions, but couldn't finish because food was generally too salty (especially flautas). Tacos and burritos were okay, but better tasting tacos can be found elsewhere. Watery guacamole. Pina drink tasted like sugar water. Cashier very friendly. Chips and salsa available for orders $5 or more...but that's not enough to draw me back to the place. Overall, never again.
(1)rm t.
Great neighborhood taqueria! Good food, very reasonable prices and a friendly smiling staff. Try the Carnitas....you will NOT be sorry!
(5)Y A.
This place is conveniently down the street from my place of work! They are great. The food is great along with the customer service. I usually call in my order and it is always ready by the time I arrive to pick it up.
(4)Douglas W.
Never judge a book by its cover -- and Viva proves this all too well! Like Eric, I too was curious over 100% 5 star ratings...so we headed over with the entire family (4/7/8yr olds) who are more than a bit picky when it comes to agreeing on a place for dinner. Anyway, we were simply BLOWN AWAY with the food -- AND the reasonable prices (which we hope stay that way...): carne asada fajitas were seasoned just right and served piping hot and fresh with all the right sides... the super nachos were delicious -- and made to order...even with more than one meat selection as requested. Finally: wow! carnitas that are both crunchy AND moist & tender...simply killer! The kids can't wait to return...nor can we!
(5)R A.
One of the best burritos ever. I came here because of previous reviews, and everyone is right! Had the super burrito with chicken. $5.75 and it's huge! The place picked up a pretty good lunch crowd, they nicely bring your food to the table, and the free chips & salsa (with orders over $5) were great. If I didn't live an hour away, I would eat here all the time.
(5)Bob S.
This place has delicious food. I real 5-star flavor. I gave the 4 star overall rating because I often phone in my order for and the communication are a little challenging. Aside from that...I love this place.
(4)Thomas S.
This place is weak as hell. I ordered the regular carne asada burrito. It tasted like a freaking rice platter. I was extremely disappointed by it. I had heard really good things about it. I assure you, I will NEVER go there again. If you're in that area, skip it and hit up Mondo Burrito or Cazadores also in Santa Clara. Viva Taqueria is down there with Chipotle on my list.
(1)Ravinder L.
I've tried nearly every taqueria in Santa Clara and have yet to find a great taco place. The search is over. Viva Taqueria definitely has the best tacos in Santa Clara and I'm glad I found them on Yelp. Next time I'll try the Burrito.
(4)Tyler L.
This is my favorite taqueria so far in th SJ area. The al pastor and carnitas are my favorties, usually in the super burrito. Their super burritos are one of the best deals around given the size and quality. The horchata is very nice too. The owner's are very friendly as well and I can tell they have a very loyal customer base, as I'm beginning to recognize other customers now!
(5)Sara C.
I had the mojado burrito with chicken. For only 5 dollars, it was enough for dinner and lunch -and it was delicious. The portions are a great size - and the food is REALLY good. It has a lot of flavor, which I find most Mexican restaurants lack. This was truly a great meal - even my dad, who is super critical of mexican food, LOVED this place.
(4)Pope A.
Got the burrito, it was good but nothing terribly awesome. Good price though for the size. Nachos in the center island, left much to be desired..not fresh. This might be blasphemy to many, but I think I would rather go to Chipotle
(2)d d.
went to check out viva taqueria based on yelp reviews and to give more business to local family run places. the menu is nice as far as authentic mexican food goes. think people way overhyped the burrito stuff tho. its not huge like some people exaggerate. we had a carne asada burrito and a california burrito. the california was like the size of a chipotle burrito. the regular carne asada burrito was ok but i think there is way too much beans or something greasy is in there lol cuz after a few hours we were both hitting the bathrooms and farting stinky fumes everywhere. i usually dont have that problem with any other mexican food places so something funny (sic) was going on... dont think its a problem with us but i dunno if other people are just too embarassed to talk bout that stuff on yelp hahah... reviews made a big deal about the amount of meat in the carne asada but i found that overhyped too. they put alot of rice and beans in there to fill it up. yes there is meat but its not as lean cuts of beef as the kind at some other places. course there are also places that give you less meat as well but some of the yelp reviews set my expectations higher. i was disappointed that regular burrito doesnt get you any cheese. you have to order super for cheese but then that thing is full of sour cream and guacamole which i didnt want. bathroom is clean but you gotta go outside behind the liquor store. its weird, the ceiling is trashed and the water heater is inside the bathroom. the big piles of trash next to the big trash bin by the parking really smells bad lol. soon as you get out of the car, it reeeeks... the service was really nice, fast and friendly. tortilla chips and different salsas were great. the burritos tasted good. the plastic chairs and tables outside were lil dirty like food stuff kinda on buncha areas so we grabbed buncha napkins and wiped them up ourselves. while we were sitting outside, there was some huge argument going on next door at the falafel place and people were yelling their heads off. everytime we looked over, the angry restaurant guy from the falafel place would glare at all of us people sitting at the taqueria staring at him yelling. what a goofy place! anyways, we give the food 4 stars, but i was tempted to take a star off for the garbage stench, tables and chairs we had to wipe up ourselves, and the fart-a-thon beans. keeping it at 4 stars tho mostly because it was the yelp reviews that overhyped my expectations. no fault of the restaurant itself. its a nice little place. hmm addendum, i just read the department of environmental health report on viva taqueria and when i got to the line about vermin, ie rodents, cockroaches and flies, that just made my stomach turn lol. its not a major food safety violation, just 11 minor violations so knocking off a star to try and keep businesses accountable for consumer food safety. 11 minor violations is alot but it looks like they cleaned up some maybe. sccinspections.org/onlin…
(3)Simon T.
Got the carne asada super burrito and it is SOLID. Free chips and salsa to boot. Prices are very reasonable. A great deal!
(5)Lars N.
Carne asada burrito is hugely delicious and flavorful. I usually also get a super taco (so huge you can't even fold it closed) too, a bag of the chips, and a few cokes. Service is always really fast too, even with a few customers in line. I'm a big fan of this place.
(5)Lewis C.
If you are looking for a good, hearty taqueria with great food and a "local neighborhood hole-in-the-wall" feel, then look no further. This is your spot. It is the exact opposite of chain taquerias like Andale. This place is family run. The carnitas are fantastic. Order them in a soft taco and you will be very pleased. They pan fry two yellow corn tortillas and put in a very healthy handful of meat and top off with onions/cilantro. I think it is the best deal on the menu at just over $2 bucks. The enchiladas are very very good. The nachos are also very very good (we had the Carne Asada topping) but the chips are a little bit on the flimsy side, so eat fast or soggy-factor will set in. One of their unique house specialties is a "California" burrito that has fries inside along with the rest of more traditional taqueria fillings. Of course my teenage son ordered it. Tasty! And to top it off, the lady at the register was off-the-charts friendly. Not what you would normally expect, but it was definitely appreciated. It can make a difference, even in an "order it yourself at the counter" kind of place like this. This is a spot to come back to over and over again.
(5)JK S.
Food is bomb and if latinos go there then you know it is legit. Food is quality and tastes real.
(5)torrie j.
Decent taqueria, good food, but if you can find one that's closer, what's the point
(4)joseph s.
this is a great little taco shop, the best chicken burrito ever
(5)Ryan G.
Cheap, bigger portions than chipotle, and significantly better than chipotle. This is very much a hole in the wall but it is awesome. Some of the best mexican food i have been to
(5)Alex S.
Tried carne asada. Beef was not chewable and my stock was upset later. Methinksnot!
(1)Eb L.
I've been here twice, once for tacos de carne asada and a second time for a super burrito also carne asada. The tacos: May have been good if not for the disgusting salsa they use. It tastes canned and has an odd sweetness to it. It reminded me of pace salsa or one of the other nasty salsas in a jar. It also had a strong oregano flavor to it, no bueno. The burrito: The tortilla was over cooked and flaky. The carne asada was super crispy which only leads me to believe it had been cooked and re heated a few times. The meat had no flavor and wasn't in the least bit tender. The guacamole in the burrito was bland, the avocados weren't ripe enough and the guac lacked salt. The temperature of the guac also cooled the burrito way down. Nothing like taking a bite of warm crispy meat followed immediately by cold sour cream, cheese, and guacamole. MMMM To top it off the burrito was sloppy, loosely wrapped and a pain to try to eat even with the foil mostly on. The burrito also suffered from the horrible salsa they use. I have no idea how this place has a 4 star rating.
(1)Frank R.
I have heard that Viva Taqueria was pretty good; I visited my friend last weekend who lives a stone's throw away from this place and heard hat this place was epic, the best Mexican food for 30 miles around. Unfortunately, this was not my experience. I ordered the Carne Asada plate...to be succinct, it was simply inedible. No, I am not some crazy foodie with aspirations to be Gordon Ramsay so don't think I'm being overly dramatic. The simple fact was that the Carne Asada tasted like overcooked dog food. The carne asada was definitely not marinated or seasoned in any way. It was horribly overcooked and was simply inedible. I gave a piece to my friend, and he concurred that it just wasn't anything you'd want to eat. I ate the beans and rice (mediocre at best) and left every scrap of meat on the dish, hoping the cook would get the hint. For $13 I ate some semi-warm tortillas with mediocre rice and beans. I literally couldn't eat anything else I am pretty disappointed...this place was supposed to be awesome, and it was a horrible let down. Maybe the cook was bad, maybe I got them on an off day...that being said, I won't be trying them again the next time I visit!
(1)romr r.
Man, AGAIN, Santa Clara Yelpers either suck or don't have good taste. I had a burrito here and it was definitely 3 out of 5 stars. I am giving this place a 1 to try to even out the false reviews.
(1)teena g.
I love Mexican food and since I moved to the Bay Area four years ago, I have not found any good Mexican food until now. Viva Taqueria rocks! It's small, friendly, has delicious salsas, flavorful meats, and just overall tasty authentic Mexican food. Very few places make fresh tortillas - I love them! Not the cheapest Mexican food around, but definitely worth the price. Seriously, a place has to earn 5 stars and they did.
(5)Chris S.
Best tacos adobada around.
